Obituary of Lela May Overton Jay

Lela May Overton Jay, born June 18, 1929, in Bethpage, TN, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2021. Funeral Service will be Tuesday, December 21st at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Family Heritage Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 21st from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Upper Bethpage Cemetery. Lela lived all but 17 years of her life at the Overton Family Homeplace in Bethpage, TN. She was a graduate of Gallatin High School class of 1951. Lela held membership at First Baptist Church Gallatin, Family and Community Education (FCE) Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter Bethpage 5 and the American Legion Auxiliary. Ms. Jay worked primarily at home, providing for her family. During the 1970s, she worked in several skilled nursing facilities in Trousdale and Sumner County. She also provided private, in-home elder care for several families through the 1980s. She is preceded in death by parents Lee and Nellie Overton; siblings John Overton, Elizabeth Moss, and Theta Campbell; nephews and niece Clyde Overton, Donald Moss, and Libby Spears; and infant sons. Ms. Jay is survived by daughter Melinda Norman (John), grandchildren JJ Norman (Sam Parks), Hannah Riess (Ben), and Jacob Norman; siblings Virginia Law, James Overton “Chigger,” Rowena Griffy (TJ), Martha Bolton, as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews. She often shared these words of encouragement with anyone she came in contact with, “Just put the Lord first in your life, and everything will be alright.” Mrs. Jay’s service will be Live Streamed – you can find the link on the website prior to her service or lelajay.familyheritagefh.com.
