Obituary of Wesley Arthur Voigt

Wesley Arthur Voigt, son of the late Reuben and Ludmilla Voigt, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, went to his eternal home on May 25, 2022, at the age of 89. As a young man, Wes served honorably in the United States Air Force, stationed in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1961, he became the first manager then director of the newly created Methodist Camp in Cleveland, SC. Ultimately, the camp was to be renamed Asbury Hills United Methodist Camp, and it was in this place that Wes shared his love for Christ and spent his entire working life. He made a lasting impact on many children and adults whose paths crossed the beautiful, and even spiritual, foothills of God’s great creation. If you ever spent time at the camp, you will recall hearing the rattle of the red Jeep that let you know Wes was near, the wisdom of his Monday night Lake Chapel devotions, or that quiet, but firm, “lights out” coming from the darkness outside the cabin if bedtime was not being observed! Wes was a faithful steward of this special place and its mission for 37 years.

While raising a family and working at the camp, Wes volunteered for many civic, church and charitable organizations. He spent many years volunteering with the American Red Cross which honored his service with the Clara Barton Volunteer Award in 1988. He was particularly interested in working with the American Camping Association and spent countless hours helping to write and promote standards for camps across the country. He served as the Chairperson of the ACA National Convention held in Atlanta, GA in 1985. Wes was also honored with the Southern Region Honor Award from the ACA.

In 1997, Wes and his faithful wife, Dolly, retired and moved to the beautiful mountain town of Hendersonville, NC. Wes and Dolly enjoyed many years of old and new friends, activities at First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville, and leisurely time with their children and grandchildren. Their interests were varied and fulfilling.

Wes is survived by his wife Dolores “Dolly” A. Voigt of Lebanon, TN; his son, Wesley A. Voigt Jr. and wife, Sharon White; daughters: Glenda McCue and Marc Concepcion, Ruth Ann Rogers, and Christina Bridwell; grandchildren: Brandi Fox and husband, Chris Fox, Anne Voigt, Ryan McCue and wife, Lauren DeBueriis, Cory McCue, Jenna Henson and husband, Michael Henson, and Robin Bridwell Jr.: great-grandchildren: Savannah Fox, Jackson Fox and Amelia McCue: and sister, Diane Brull of Manitowoc, WI.

Wes was predeceased by his sisters: Carol Hubbard of Lansing, IL and Marilyn Pagels of Gleason, WI; sons-in-law: James Robin Bridwell of Taylors, SC, James Albert McCue of Columbia, SC, and Larry Eugene Rogers of Florence, SC.

A memorial service to remember the life of Wes Voigt will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at the First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville, NC. A reception in the Getman Room will follow immediately after the interment. Memorials may be made to the Asbury Hills Camper Scholarship Fund or The Lenten Challenge Fund of the First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville.
