Obituary of Glenda Brown Milliken
Glenda Brown Milliken, age 79 of Gallatin, passed away Thursday, October 27, 2022. Funeral Service will be Saturday, November 5th at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Sellars Family Heritage at Gallatin, with Ray Young officiating. Visitation will be Friday, November 4th 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 5th from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow the service at Crestview Memory Gardens, with family and friends serving as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Historic Rose Mont, 810 South Water Avenue, Gallatin, TN 37066 or Cragfont State Historic Site, 200 Cragfont Road, Castalian Springs, TN 37031.
Mrs. Milliken was born October 17, 1943 in Gallatin, and raised in the Sulphura Community, to the late Olie B. Brown and Louise Kirkham Brown. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by brother, Rudy Brown. She is survived by husband of 32 years, Jasper Milliken of Gallatin; son, Don Vanatta of Gallatin; step son, Jasper Milliken III (Kimberly) of St. Petersburg, FL; sister, Gerry Glass (Jim) of Greenville, SC; 3 step-grandchildren, Jasper Milliken IV, Lindsay Nicole Piccion (Jean-Paul), and Michael Milliken; and 2 step-great grandchildren, Savannah Piccion and Archer Jasper Piccion. Mrs. Milliken was a member of College Heights Baptist Church and First Baptist Gallatin. She began her career at Gallatin Aluminum Products Company (Gapco) in Gallatin, as secretary for Gallatin businessman and historian Walter T. Durham. That job would culminate into a 52-year career as his associate researching, editing, and proofing numerous books on Sumner County and Middle Tennessee history. She was a past president of the Sumner County Historical Society and served on the boards of the Society, the Sumner County Museum Association, and Historic Cragfont. In 2002, she co-edited Gallatin 200, A Time Line History Celebrating the Bicentennial of Gallatin, Tennessee with Walter Durham. During this same year, she was presented the Silver Quill Award in recognition and appreciation of outstanding dedication to preserving the history of the City of Gallatin. In 2009, she served as the Chair of the Portland Sesquicentennial Book Committee. This book, Sesquicentennial, Portland, Tennessee, provides an illustrated timeline of the 150-year history of Portland. Also in 2009, she served on the 150th Anniversary Committee for First Baptist Church, Gallatin. A publication was developed that documented the history of the church for the sesquicentennial milestone. Her favorite charities were Sumner Regional Medical Center and Volunteer State Community College. She was a member of the Sumner County Secretarial Association. In addition to history and historic landmarks, her interests included antiques, traveling, cooking, genealogy, and collecting vintage purses. She was known for her kindness and generosity to all that crossed her path. She was a loyal friend to many, a wonderful wife, and the greatest mother a son could ever ask for.
