When Medgar Evers was gunned down in Mississippi, Brother Will journeyed to Atlanta for an emergency meeting with Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He remained uncharacteristically quiet through the long meeting, until Rev. Andrew Young called upon him for any suggestions or advice he might have to offer. "Yes," said Rev.
Will, "I think we should go over to Mississippi and bury our brother."
Done deal . . . And properly and righteously so.
Hugs for Brenda and their grieving children, We all are a richer country for Will D. Campbell's Christian witness . . .

Will wrote blurbs for two of my books. He read The Bubba Newsletter and when I ran into him years after the book was published and the newsletter died, he said, "Hello, Bubba." It meant the world to me to be known by such an incredible iconoclast. Will never wanted to be a great man, which may be one of the requirements for becoming one. He had an incorrigible ego which inoculated him against his ever being accused of humility. He was on the right side of history, which has to be humbling enough. I loved him even though he chewed me out for being sanctimonious one time. I loved hearing him at the Logan Preaching Mission in Rutherfordton, N.C. He's probably the only Logan speaker to talk about talking marijuana to a friend dying of cancer. What a guy!
