Obituary of Estelle Prichard Jewell

Estelle Jewell, age 96, passed away on May 1, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband of 75 years, James "Jimmy" R. Jewell, Sr. They were married July 2, 1938 by her grandpa Reverend Joseph Webster at the First United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, James R. (Maureen) Jewell, Jr. of San Diego, CA and Joe Blythe (Carla) Jewell of Queckee, VT, and one daughter Martha Estelle (Todd) Duff of Signal Mountain, TN, five grandchildren: Blythe (Jason) Gander of Austin TX, Kate (Conor) Hansen of Boston MA, Sarah Jewell of Austin TX, Zachary Jewell of Boston MA, Tommy (Abby) Duff of Signal Mountain TN, and four great-grandchildren, Samuel James Gander, Leo Prichard Hansen, Oona Hansen, and Alexandria Duff. She was the daughter of Joe Blythe and Katherine Webster Prichard who preceded her in death, her brother J.W. "Billy" Prichard, and also two sisters Evelyn Prichard Orr and Betty Kate Hall. She was born July 22, 1917 in Lebanon, TN and attended Highland Heights Elementary School and Lebanon High School where she graduated in 1935. She was an outstanding basketball player, having held the record for more points in one game and one season set in 1934-35 for over 25 years. She was selected into the Inaugural Lebanon High School Sports Hall of Fame in December, 2007. She was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1925 and was a member of this church longer than any member. She taught Sunday School, served on Youth Council, and Member of the Administrative Board for a number of years. She was a member of Rebekah Group of United Methodist Women and also retired from La Coterie Women's Club and several bridge clubs. She retired as Bookkeeper and Executive Secretary of Lebanon Tenth Special School District in 1979 after serving for 24 years. After retiring, Estelle and Jimmy were campers and had been in all the states except Alaska where they started and she became sick and had to return home. She had asthma for over 25 years and so often didn't feel like doing what she wanted to. Her funeral, conducted by Reverend Bucky Hesson and Bishop Robert H. Spain, and Reverend Mike Ripski, will be held at First United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2014, with visitation at the church from 1 p.m. until the service at 2 p.m. The family will be receiving friends on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Sellars Funeral Home from 4-6 p.m. The family will have a private burial in Wilson County Memorial on Monday morning.
