While listening to the great jazz pianist, Alan Pasqua, I am thinking of the great jazz and classical pianist Bill Etter, who I played music with in the Herman Waddell and the Rhythmaires band in the 1980s at the John Trotwood Moore and the Sr Citizens Center with Frank Innocenti on sax.
Bill and Frank would argue about music. Bill, who introduced all of us to Chopin, his favorite. With his legs crossed at the keys, and ever present cigar, during all our breaks he'd play Chopin and other beautiful pieces.
Bill and Frank had different musical tastes and they would rib each other.
Bill mocked Frank's favorite, Guy Lombardo, and told him, he was a 'simpleton.' In the big band realm Bill was more of a Benny Goodman fan, a much more complex (like Bill) musician. Well Frank, ever the fighter said, "Bill, Benny Goodman could play a million notes and no one knew who he was. Guy Lombardo played one note and a million people knew who it was!" I loved that, but Bill just waved him off, took another drag off his cigar and continued on with a Chopin etude.
Bill was so smart, charming, and had a quiet poetic way. Everyone loved being around him, and as you can see, after 40 years I remember him vividly.
To his family, God bless you, I am sorry it took me so long to say this. I have been looking all over for him.
Fondly,
Andy Martin
