Obituary of Lucy Richey

Lucy Emmaline Giles Richey

Known to many Gallatonians as the daughter of Dr. Clifford D. Giles, but emergent in her own right, Lucy Emmaline (Giles) Richey passed from this life on September 12, 2018. Educated at Gallatin High School and Gulf Park Academy, Gulfport, MS:  and Sweet Briar College, Amherst, VA; she married Thomas Richey, Jr., on September 2, 1961 and commenced a career in New York City. After several years with New York Life as a group advisor, the couple began a series of locations at corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, Pittsburgh, PA, then returning to New York City.

Born in Gallatin on April 6, 1939, Lucy Emmaline’s childhood included apricot fights on Hume Street with neighborhood friends, taking dance lessons from Miss Betsy, and riding her horse, Blackie, on Giles Lane and in Castalian Springs. Occasional trips to the pool in Lebanon, TN, also were summer high points. She got much pleasure cooking wonderful meals for her family and any company that came for a visit. She also loved her game nights with family. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. And her faith brought her to the Main Street Church of Christ and the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour.

Lucy was a founder of the Gallatin Junior Service League and was active in the Junior League of Nashville, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Gallatin Study Club, and the Fairvue Plantation Ladies Historical Society where she set up historic tours in the local area. She also was a donor to and member of the Friends of the Gallatin Library.

Mrs. Richey was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Clifford D. Giles and Mildred Giles.  She is survived by her husband, Thomas Richey, Jr.; her children, Kathryn Anne Richey MacDougall and husband, Kirk MacDougall of Erie, CO; and Thomas Giles Richey and wife April Richey of Jackson, TN; and her grandchildren, Austin MacDougall of Dallas, TX, and Duncan MacDougall of Erie, CO. She also leaves behind many extended family members who are dear to her.

The family will receive friends and relatives from 5 to 8 pm Friday, September 21st and 11 am to 12 pm Saturday, September 22nd at Church of Our Saviour, Gallatin. Immediately following the Saturday visitation at the church, there will be a celebration of life service followed by a reception by the family in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Church of Our Saviour, 704 Hartsville Pike, Gallatin, TN 37066 or to the Gallatin Library, 123 East Main Street, Gallatin, TN 37066.  Online condolences may be submitted at alexanderheritagefh.com.  Alexander Family Heritage Funeral Home, 100 Albert Gallatin Avenue, has been honored with arrangements.
