It was with such profound sadness that we just learned today that our friend and shipmate, Doug, passed away five months ago. After attempting to wish him a happy Thanksgiving Day via telephone we knew that something was amiss when we got a wrong number recording. After a search online today we found his obituary. What a terrible shock and such a deep loss! Cecilia and I were stationed with Doug from 1990–93, at Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt, Western Australia. Neither of us knew each other before our serendipitous assignment in the Land Down Under. We quickly became good friends and shipmates and we are very proud to have known Doug! He was an outstanding Master Chief Radioman as well as a true patriot who served his country with honor and distinction. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten. I was sad to learn today that my old mate from Antarctica had passed away some months ago. Doug was a good friend over many months on the ice and through the 30+ years (via e mail) since. Many a beer and cigar was shared in the wee hours when tall tales grow even taller. He was a credit to his service and to his deployment in the Deep South. Fond memories of a wonderful shipmate and colleague. We became great, lifelong friends after we led 200 sailors, seabees, and civilian contractors safely through the rigors of the Antarctic winter for Operation Deep Freeze 33.
