I am so sorry for your loss. My children and I first met Jerry soon after he started working at the weather place. As homeschoolers, we took several fieldtrips to learn about forecasting the weather. Of special enjoyment was being able to observe weather balloons being released. Then we trained to become storm spotters. We always found Jerry to be friendly and warm. We join you in your grief. He will be missed.

My sincere condolences to Jerry's family. He was one of the nicest, kindest gentlemen I have ever met and has left us far too early. In early 1996, shortly after my boss had passed away and I was working alone to keep things going at work, I had a request from one of our elementary schools for a speaker on weather for their children. I contacted Jerry to see if he had any materials I could borrow to put things on the level for children, and he (knowing I was working alone at the time) volunteered to come to Putnam County and meet the school's needs. He came up and taught weather to small children most of the day to take the load from me. He even brought part of a weather balloon to pass around which thrilled the children. I know that was a day they will never forget and neither will I. He returned to Putnam County many times after that to teach our Stormspotter classes. Some of our persoonel and citizens have returned almost every year to hear Jerry and learn more from him. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. May God bless you in your time of loss.

To Jerry's family,
I am one of Jerry's storm spotter trainees. I met him at a storm spotter class in 2005, and he taught me how to respect severe weather and not to be scared of it. I became a storm spotter to help me keep my family and neighbors safe. I always enjoyed talking to Jerry when I called in weather information. He made me feel comfortable when I called because in the beginning I was very nervous, hoping I was saying and giving the correct information. He always told me and others how thankful he was to us for doing a very important job.
Everytime a storm brews in Coffee County or anywhere else, I shall think of Jerry and say a prayer for his family. I shall miss him at future classes.
Well, he rode that "twister" to Heaven. He'll never have to "ride the storms out" anymore. I pray that God will comfort you all in this time of sorrow. My tears are falling like the rain that is coming our way. I will try to make it to Mt. Juliet if I don't get lost, and if the heavy rains doesn't stall me. If I don't, just know Jerry and his family will always be in my thoughts and prayers. May God Be With YOU!

We at the NWS office in Nashville were all shocked at Jerry's passing. We knew he had been sick, but we were hopeful of his eventual recovery and return to work in the not too distant future. Jerry and I arrived at the office nearly at the same time back in 1994 as I remember it, when the office was starting to gear up to become a full-fledged forecast office for Middle Tennessee. We both assisted in the so-called office "spinup activities" to become a forecast office. Because of Jerry's recent illness, he had been out of the office somewhat frequently due to operations, recuperation and doctor visits. Now however, his permanent absence will be hard indeed to bear. It's going to be a somewhat lonely place for awhile without Jerry's jovial nature to help liven things up at the office. I'll miss those times when we went out on storm surveys together and I learned more about surveying from him. I'm going to miss his weather expertise and quite frankly, Jerry just being around. He was truly a "good guy" and will be hard to replace! But as much as we miss him already, he is certainly now in a better place indeed.

Jerry's passing was way too soon. Patricia, my thoughts and prayers are with you and I can only hope that all of these kind words and condolences that I read help you through this difficult time. Jerry was a fantastic guy and he helped me become a little "famous". On one of my first evening shifts ever as a journeyman forecaster at the Nashville, TN office, Jerry informed me that The Discovery Channel would be coming in for a re-enactment of the Nashville tornado. I didn't think anything of it, except that it'd be kinda neat seeing this thing made. What I didn't know was that I was going to end up helping to re-enact the darn thing! That show aired for years on The Discovery Channel and a few others. I had so many people come up to me over those years and say, "I could swear I saw you on TV!". Well, ya did. Thanks Jerry, not for the TV time, but for all you have helped me learn over my few years at Nashville and for providing me with many laughs. You will be missed.

My knowledge of severe weather was GREATLY enhanced by Jerry's teaching. He will be missed and my condolences go out to his wife, his extended family, and his huge family of co-workers at the Nat'l Weather Service here and in West Virginia. He was a kind, gentle man with a sweet demeanor. Our last Spotter's Class he taught up here in Putnam County will always be special to me. I have the materials and my notes from his teaching on my desk and will think of Jerry when I look at them. Thanks for being a great example Jerry. We miss you and can't wait to see you again in Heaven! Sincerely,
Michael D. Cookeville, TN

Tree,
I am so sorry Jerry had to leave us so soon. He was a brave and courageous man in his fight to stay with all of us a little longer. Times like this make us think about just how precious our time is with our loved ones and friends. Each day is a blessing. Jerry was truly a tremendous, loving, and kind man. I can't begin to imagine the loss you feel right now but I know God is holding you in His hands, surrounding you in His love. I can picture Jerry smiling beside Him saying "thank you" for his life with you. I think you both were truly blessed, as everyone that knew Jerry . I love you Tree. Please know I'm here for you as you have been for me. Anything - just let me know! My thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Joy

I am saddened to hear of the loss of Jerry. He was one of the kindest and most delightful people I have ever met. His vast knowledge of weather coupled with his passion to relay that knowledge to save lives was never-ending. He would help with a weather story at the drop of hat and constantly went above and beyond. Jerry was definitely a true gem in this world. He will be missed. I send my prayers for his family.

Pat; I just read your email and I am deeply saddened by your loss of your husband Jerry. Although, I've never met him, I feel that he must have been a great guy because of all the comments by those that did know him. I'm sure that you are at peace knowing that when he left that sick bed that he went into the arms of Jesus, just what he has strived to do all those years of serving Him. I pray that God will comfort and strengthen you until the time that you can go to be with him.

Jerry was the first person to give me my first "break" in the weather field. At the age of 16, Jerry allowed me to become a Junior Intern at the NWSFO in Old Hickory, TN. It was a great learning experience and only heightened my interest. 10 years later, I am a meteorologist working in the Aviation industry and I look back and thank him for the wonder opportunity he gave me. God bless him and his family during this most difficult time. Dustin Maddox,

Aunt Pat, I was so, so sorry to hear about Uncle Jerry's passing. All of us here in NY are praying for you and thinking of you. I have fond memories of going to horror movies as a youngster with Uncle Jer, and still have the ash from Mt. St. Helen's that he brought back for me when he went to visit after it erupted in 1980! We all love and miss you very much.

I was saddened to hear of Jerrys' passing. During my years in Nashville at The Tennessee Radio Network and then at WLAC, Jerry was always ready to help whenever we needed him on a story or in a weather situation. I am certain his work saved lives across Middle Tennessee, and he will be greatly missed, not only by his family and friends but by those in the media he was always so helpful to.

Pat,
I saw in Sunday's Gazette-Mail that your husband passed away. I'm so sorry for your loss. I have oftened thought about you and wondered where you were living. I knew your last name and immediately thought that he must be related to you. I keep a current address/telephone directory of all our classmates and yours was one that the address was unknown. We had our 40th class reunion in 2005 and will have another one in 2010. I remember us riding the school bus together and being friends in junior high. Would you send me your current address, telephone number, and email address for the directory? I would love to hear from you. My address is 114 Hazel Drive, Elkview, WV 25071 and my phone number is 304-965-0128. Actually, I live in Big Chimney. I'll keep you in my prayers and I am looking forward to hearing from you. May God Bless You Karen

Jerry was one of my favorite people during my days at TEMA. His commitment to the Spotters program was reason enough, but he added to that with a personality full of friendly grace that was rare indeed.
