In his childhood, he played football for the better part of his younger life from PeeWee to Walter J. Baird, where his team went undefeated, to playing for the Lebanon High School Blue Devils. During these years he made friends who would remain with him through the end of his life. His Senior year in high school, he was voted "Most Popular Boy." He continued to be an avid football and basketball fan, loving the college game. Always cheering on his beloved UT Vols. He attended many games at UT over the years with his Dad and a close group of friends.
Matt had many nieces and nephews with mutual love and admiration for each of them. He loved attending their extra activities and did so as often as he could. After high school, he attended MTSU where he met, Katie Kuchta, the love of his life. Matt became employed by the Wilson County Sheriff's Department and was promoted to the rank of Corporal. He married Katie in May of 2009. They have one daughter, Anniston, who is four years old. His favorite thing to do with Anniston was play hide-and-seek in the park. Although the stresses of life came between them and their marriage, they continued to be steadfast partners in the love and rearing of their child.
Matt had many endearing characteristics the first of which everyone would name would be his quick wit, ability to make everyone laugh and finding the humor in everything. His wonderful imagination with Photo-Shopping has brought smiles to hundreds of people in his family and on social media.
Matt had struggles in life as we all do. He battled them in productive ways. He graduated from a 14 month residential program at Teen Challenge Mid-America, where he learned the unending reservoir of God's love and Grace, one of his proudest moments in his recovery. He reconnected with family and him and his Dad became each other's best friend. He loved to fish and did so often with his brother-in- law, Zach. They called themselves the "Tennessee Twosome." His love for his family only deepened during this time, strengthening bonds that the entire family will cling to as they now live their lives to honor his memory. As so often happens in this life, the struggles came again and this time they would lead to the end of his life. A life lived full of love and heartache, laughter and tears, sickness and healing, as all of us do. His family will live on remembering his big heart, his eternal sweetness and his infectious laugh. We love you, Mattie. We will see you again. Sellars Funeral Home, Lebanon TN, 615.444.9393.
