From the first day I moved in next door to Hilda I knew she was special because my dog Tiny was bound and determined to slip past the partition between our patios to go see Hilda. As you know, Hilda's health prevented her from enjoying the companionship of the animals like we do and I tried over and over again to keep Tiny away from Hilda, but she still grew as protective of Hilda as the rest of us as time went on. Most recently was when the maintenance men were going to Hildas' to fix plumbing issues. On two occasions Tiny went postal over in my apartment when those men knocked on Hildas' door. It didn't matter that Becky and Tonia were both over there with Hilda, Tiny felt it was her duty to run the evil men off. Another neighbor of ours, Bettye Cocke (Walking Bettye) delighted in relieving Hilda of her trash when she was walking down to the trash chute. If Hilda tried to slip down the hall with a bag of trash, we tried to make sure that she never made it to the elevators. We loved her and didn't want her to risk hurting herself on the chute door. She probably thought we were insane. I already miss the late night phone calls. We have people who live in the building who think it is funny to twist our doorhandles or knock on the door late in the evening. Hilda and I had a pact that she would call me if it happened to her house and I would open my door to see who was there. Usually, the only thing I witnessed was the slamming of the fire door at the end of the hall, so we weren't real successful at catching the rapscallion. However, we were able to catch up on the news of the day and she would tell me about how it was to be raised in Old Hickory. Hilda did something a lot of Americans never do in their lifetimes, she lived long enough to see her entry of the most recently released U. S. Federal Census. In the last few months Hilda received comfort when I turned on my porch light because it illluminated parts of her patio. She said that she left hers on all night because it lit the way to her restroom. I remember thinking at the time, really? Boy did it. My porch light lights up most of what I call the Alastair Cookie Reading nook. I love it and would never have considered turning the porch light on unless an emergency required it. I anguished over that light when I turned it off on Saturday Night. I will turn it back on eventually. I will think of Hilda often as I do. As a special message to Becky; I have no doubt your entrance into heaven is secure, you have earned it honestly, loyally and with love towards your mother and family. Love, Tiffany and Tiny Holstead
and Bettye Cocke (Walking Bettye)
